Why is the challenge 21 days?
I was asked this question by a few people preparing for the
I AM CHALLENGE.
I am so thankful you asked!
Many years ago I was involved in a leadership building business and one of the foundational principles taught is the thought that it takes 21 days to create a new habit (or break an old one).
I bought it! I loved the idea of being able to make a distinct change in such a short period of time. I was driven to make change in my life, I wanted more...I wanted a change! I tested this philosophy out and thankfully had great results in many areas of my life.
I shed some unwanted habits (drinking diet coke, eating ice cream every night, and using language that was not life giving) I also began new protocols in my life; I began drinking more water, I started taking vitamins and I prayed every day.
It was literally life changing.
The I AM Challenge was birthed during a 21 day time of fasting and prayer in 2011, after I began speaking life over myself every day, several times a day and 21 days, it became a way of life.
Was it easy, nope.
Was it worth it, absolutley!
Now today in 2017, if you research, you will find myth busters who will disagree with the 21 day habit buster, claiming, instead it takes 60-80 days to form a habit.
I have read most of their research and their point is valid, however, I will still contend the 21 days is the point where the habit is birthed.
Think about it, if you do anything diligently for three weeks, it will become habit forming. Its only logical is you do it for 6 months to a year and that habit is solidified.
I hope this answers your question as you get ready to begin the 2017 I AM Challenge March 1st!
Blessings,
Melody
